Four is pronounced "shi" in Japanese, which is also the word for "death." I'm not sure why 4 is an unlucky number in China. (and again, Clay, thanks for hooking us up)

i actually asked a friend about it last night who would know. she says the same about chinese (as you just said about japanese), but interestingly the words are different tones, i.e. not exactly what we in english call homonyms.
